Western Herbal Medicine

Dip.Herb.Med, MNIMH, BA (Hons).

I originally trained in music at Dartington College of Arts where I specialised in composition which led to a short career as a freelance musician. For the last 15 years I have worked as a gardener where my knowledge and love of plants has grown. A personal health condition led me to herbal medicine where I became fascinated by the medicinal powers of plants and their natural affinity to the human body. This and visiting a medicinal herbal garden led me to studying for 4 years with Betonica School of Herbal Medicine where I graduated with a merit. I am a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists, the largest body of professional medical herbalists in the UK which has operated since 1864.

I am passionate about organic growing and wherever possible use herbs that are grown in the UK to make herbal medicines. Biodynamic gardening is concurrently my latest interest, and many of my medicines originate from Rutland Biodynamic Farm.

It is my goal to one day grow all my own herbs (and food) in this way to continue working the land, instead for my dispensary and subsequently my patients.

Herbal medicine combines traditional knowledge with the latest scientific research to treat the body holistically, starting with the root cause of ill health. Medicinal herbs have been used for millennia to support health. They contain numerous constituents that impact many different physiological pathways and aim to restore homeostasis within the body. Herbs can aid with a range of acute and chronic conditions including, but not limited to: stress, anxiety & low mood, women’s health, musculoskeletal complaints, digestive complaints, sleep disorders, cardiovascular health, fatigue & debility, immune support and seasonal allergies.

Before you book an appointment for a full one hour initial consultation, you may well have some questions about herbal medicine, treatment plans, and costs involved for which I offer a free fifteen minute phone call.

An initial consultation will last for up to an hour and will involve taking a detailed medical history as well as information regarding current complaints. At the end of the consultation a follow-up appointment will be made usually for a month’s time. These last between 15-30 minutes and continue for as long as herbal medicine is prescribed. This time scale can vary depending on the health condition and for how long you have had the condition.

Following consultation a management plan including diet and lifestyle advice as well as a tailored prescription will be prescribed where required. This medicine will be dispensed from my home and posted to you. There may also be an option for me to deliver this to you by hand.

FEES

£65 Initial consultation

£35 Follow up consultation

Medicine costs are variable. Each prescription is tailor made and may be changed throughout duration of treatment depending on requirements.

Herbal medicine may be prescribed as a tincture, a tea, capsules, a cream, pessaries, or a mixture of these.

Tinctures cost £12 for 100ml which is approximately a week’s worth of  medicine.

Teas cost £6 for 50g. When prescribed, 50-100g is dispensed.

The cost of creams is variable and the amount required is dependent on the condition, but is usually around £15.

Pessaries, suppositories and capsules all vary in price depending on each herb required.

A discussion about the treatment always precedes any dispensing of medicine. A prescription will not be made without consulting yourself and a price given.

If you are unable to afford a prescription, following dietary and lifestyle advice can support wellbeing. Teas are also a relatively cheaper way of taking herbs if costs are an issue.
